In short: The 2020 film The Courier dramatizes the true story of Greville Wynne, an ordinary British businessman recruited by MI6 to act as a courier for a high-ranking Soviet defector. His mission to ferry top-secret intelligence during the 1960s ultimately helped the United States navigate the perilous Cuban Missile Crisis.

In 1960, Oleg Penkovsky, a GRU officer disillusioned with Nikita Khrushchev, approached Western intelligence with evidence of Soviet nuclear ambitions. Seeking to avoid detection, the CIA and MI6 bypassed professional spies, instead recruiting Greville Wynne to pose as a businessman traveling to Moscow. Wynne initially resisted, but was persuaded by the gravity of the potential nuclear threat and the personal plea of Penkovsky, who had staked his life on the arrangement.

Wynne successfully transported sensitive documents and military plans, providing the U.S. with critical intelligence regarding Soviet intentions in Cuba. However, the operation placed immense strain on his personal life and eventually drew the attention of Soviet counter-intelligence. Despite the risks, Wynne later returned to Moscow in a failed attempt to facilitate Penkovsky's defection, leading to the arrest of both men. While Penkovsky was executed for treason, Wynne endured harsh imprisonment before being released in a 1964 spy swap for Konon Molody.

Directed by Dominic Cooke and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the film—originally titled Ironbark—received generally favorable reviews for its grounded, old-school approach to espionage. Critics praised the performance of Cumberbatch and the film's focus on the human cost of the Cold War. While some reviewers noted its modest ambitions, the story remains a significant historical account of the back-channel communications that helped prevent nuclear catastrophe, eventually leading to the establishment of a direct hotline between the world's superpowers.

The production, which began principal photography in London in October 2018, grossed $26 million worldwide. Beyond its box office performance, the film serves as a reminder of the unconventional individuals who shaped 20th-century history. By focusing on the relationship between a salesman and a defector, the narrative highlights how personal sacrifice and quiet cooperation played a vital role in de-escalating the most dangerous moments of the nuclear age.
