In short: In 1983, the world stood on the brink of nuclear war because the Soviets misinterpreted a NATO exercise as a first strike. One man, a high-ranking KGB officer in London, provided the intelligence that averted the catastrophe. His story is a masterclass in the high-stakes mechanics of double agency.

Oleg Gordievsky was a career intelligence officer who rose to become the 'rezident'—the chief—of the KGB station in London in 1985. For 11 years, he operated as a double agent, feeding secrets to the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) while maintaining his high-ranking position in Moscow's hierarchy. His role was so critical that MI6 actively manipulated his career, using 'secret aid' and 'trumped-up charges' to remove his direct superiors and ensure he remained in a position of power. Gordievsky's contributions were pivotal to Western security. Gordievsky played a key role in spotting Mikhail Gorbachev as the future Soviet leader well before his rise to power. Most notably, his intelligence provided the first proof of how terrified the Soviet leadership was regarding a potential NATO nuclear first strike. This information was vital during the 1983 Able Archer 83 exercise, where a Soviet misinterpretation of NATO maneuvers nearly triggered a global catastrophe. However, the mechanics of his betrayal remain shrouded in mystery. While the CIA's mole-hunter unit identified Aldrich Ames as a primary traitor in 1994, Ames's account of the timeline does not align with the facts. Ames claimed to have handed over Gordievsky's identity in June 1985, but records show Gordievsky had already fallen under suspicion and been recalled to Moscow in May 1985. This discrepancy suggests that while Ames was a major mole, he may not have been the only one who blew the cover of these high-level assets.
