In short: The Darkest Minds, a 2018 adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s young adult novel, faced a historic collapse. Despite a $34 million budget, the film suffered a catastrophic third-weekend theater drop, disappearing from over 85 percent of its screens. Critics panned the project, labeling it a formulaic entry in a crowded genre.

Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson in her live-action debut, The Darkest Minds depicts a future where a plague called Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration kills 90 percent of American children. Survivors develop color-coded superpowers, ranging from telekinesis to mind control. The narrative centers on Ruby Daly, an Orange-level threat who escapes government internment to join a resistance movement.

The film’s production journey began in 2014 when 20th Century Fox acquired the rights. By 2017, principal photography was underway in Atlanta, Georgia, featuring a cast including Amandla Stenberg and Harris Dickinson. Despite the pedigree of producers like Shawn Levy, the final product struggled to find an audience. Upon its August 3, 2018 release, it debuted to a disappointing $5.8 million, failing to meet initial projections of $10 million.

The film's box-office performance was historically poor. By its third weekend, it was pulled from 2,679 theaters, marking the largest third-weekend theater drop in history. Ultimately, it grossed $41.1 million worldwide, barely exceeding its production costs. Critics were largely unimpressed, with Rotten Tomatoes recording a 15 percent approval rating. Reviews frequently cited the film as a derivative collection of dystopian tropes that failed to distinguish itself from other young adult adaptations.

While the story is based on the first of several novels in a series, the film's commercial failure makes sequels unlikely. Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson expressed interest in returning, but the project remains a cautionary tale of a high-profile adaptation failing to resonate with both critics and the public.
