In short: Released in 1969, The Diamond Arm is a Soviet cult classic that drew over 76 million cinema admissions. Inspired by a real news story about smugglers using orthopedic casts to hide jewels, the film follows an ordinary man who accidentally becomes the target of a high-stakes criminal ring.

The plot centers on Semyon Gorbunkov, an economist who inadvertently triggers a smuggling operation while on a cruise. After a fall, he utters a code phrase intended for a courier, leading criminals to hide contraband diamonds inside his orthopedic arm cast. Upon returning to the Soviet Union, Gorbunkov alerts the authorities, who use him as bait to dismantle the black market ring led by a mysterious figure known as The Chief.

Directed by Leonid Gaidai, the film features a stellar cast including Yuri Nikulin as Gorbunkov and Andrei Mironov as the henchman Gesha. The production is noted for its clever use of music, with three songs becoming cultural touchstones. These include the ironic 'Island of Bad Luck' and the defiant 'Song About Hares,' both performed by the actors themselves. A third track, 'Help Me,' provides a parodic, tango-styled backdrop to a seduction attempt by a femme fatale.

Beyond its humor, the film offers a glimpse into Soviet-era filmmaking constraints and creativity. For instance, scenes set in an Oriental city were filmed in Baku, Azerbaijan, where producers used rare American cars like a 1954 Chevrolet 210 to create an exotic atmosphere, despite US sanctions against the USSR. The film remains a defining piece of Russian cinema, celebrated for its wit and its ability to turn a simple premise into a sprawling, multi-layered comedy of errors that concludes with a final, ironic twist for its protagonist.
