In short: Released in 1927, The Dove was a romantic drama starring Norma Talmadge that failed to impress critics. Yet, it secured a unique place in cinema history when William Cameron Menzies won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on the production, then titled Interior Decoration.

Directed by Roland West and based on a 1925 Broadway play by Willard Mack, The Dove tells the story of a despot named Don José who becomes obsessed with a dancer named Dolores. When she rejects his advances, the spurned leader frames her lover for murder. While the original narrative was set in Mexico, producers feared political backlash and relocated the setting to an unspecified Mediterranean country.

The film served as a significant milestone for its lead actress, Norma Talmadge, marking her first feature for United Artists. Despite its tepid reception, the film's visual identity was groundbreaking. William Cameron Menzies was honored with the Academy Award for Best Art Direction in 1928—and again in 1929—for his contributions to this film and Tempest. At the time, this category was officially known as Interior Decoration, reflecting the era's focus on the architectural and aesthetic construction of film sets.

Today, The Dove exists only as a fragmented relic. The Library of Congress holds reels 1, 3, 4, and 8, while reels 2, 5, 6, 7, and 9 remain missing. Additional prints are preserved by the Swedish Film Institute. The story proved resilient enough to be adapted into a talkie version in 1932, titled Girl of the Rio, which starred Dolores del Río and was directed by Herbert Brenon for RKO Radio Pictures.

The production also featured a cast of notable figures in minor or uncredited roles, including Charles Darvas, Olga Baclanova, Robert Gleckler, and Andy MacLennan. While the film itself may not be a household name, its legacy persists through the history of the Academy Awards and the ongoing efforts to preserve what remains of this silent-era experiment in set design and romantic melodrama.
