A crashed craft in Alaska sparked a global conspiracy that NBC tried to solve
In short: When a mysterious ship crashed in Alaska during World War II, it left behind survivors who looked human but aged slowly. Decades later, a U.S. President’s attempt to disclose their existence triggered a high-stakes thriller. The Event promised quick answers to its mysteries, but the audience vanished faster than the plot.
Created by Nick Wauters in 2006 and brought to NBC in 2009, The Event was designed as an 'event-type' series that would avoid the frustration of endless, unanswered questions. The narrative centered on extraterrestrials who had been secretly held at a fictional facility called Mount Inostranka since their 1944 crash. While some were detained, others known as Sleepers assimilated into the general population, leading to a complex web of political intrigue, assassination plots, and ancient rivalries.
The show debuted in September 2010 with a pilot that utilized a non-linear structure, jumping between three time frames. While this approach was intended to build suspense, it proved confusing for viewers. By the time the show returned from a mid-season hiatus in 2011, the producers had abandoned the flashback device entirely in favor of a linear narrative. Despite early buzz at San Diego Comic-Con and comparisons to hits like 24 and Lost, the show struggled to maintain its initial audience of 10.88 million viewers.
The series faced a steep decline, losing nearly half its viewership by the end of 2010. NBC eventually canceled the show in May 2011 after a single 22-episode season. While there were brief discussions about continuing the story as a miniseries or a television movie on the Syfy channel, those plans never materialized. Today, the show remains a case study in the challenges of balancing complex, serialized mystery with the need for accessible, straightforward storytelling.
