A reckless flight attendant wakes up in Bangkok to a nightmare she cannot remember.
In short: Cassie Bowden is a flight attendant whose life spirals into a high-stakes mystery after a drunken night in Bangkok ends with a passenger dead in her bed. This dark comedy-drama follows her frantic attempt to clear her name while battling her own demons and hallucinations across two intense seasons.
Based on the 2018 novel by Chris Bohjalian, The Flight Attendant premiered on HBO Max in November 2020. The series stars Kaley Cuoco as Cassie, a flight attendant struggling with alcoholism and self-destructive tendencies. The narrative kicks off when Cassie wakes up in a Bangkok hotel room next to a passenger with a slashed throat. Unable to recall the night, she cleans the crime scene and returns to New York, only to find herself under investigation by the FBI.
The show’s second season, which premiered in April 2022, shifts the focus as Cassie relocates to Los Angeles. Now sober and working as a CIA asset, she finds herself haunted by a doppelgänger who is framing her for assassinations. To film the complex sequences involving multiple versions of Cassie, the production team consulted with the crew behind Orphan Black, utilizing a massive sound stage and several body doubles to bring the hallucinations to life.
Critical reception remained strong throughout the show's run. The first season earned a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising Cuoco's performance as a sharp, compelling lead. While the second season saw a slight dip to an 86% rating, it was still lauded for its satisfying twists. Although the series was a massive hit for HBO Max—ranking as its number one show during its initial run—Cuoco confirmed in January 2024 that the story concluded with the second season.
