How a political experiment on Staten Island birthed a dystopian national tradition
In short: The First Purge reveals the cynical origins of the annual night of lawlessness. Conceived by the New Founding Fathers of America, the experiment used financial incentives and covert manipulation on Staten Island to test a radical theory: that state-sanctioned violence could solve the nation's economic and social crises.
Set in a version of the United States facing severe inflation and unemployment, the 2018 film The First Purge explores the rise of the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA). After winning the 2016 election, the party sought to reduce crime and manage social welfare costs through a controlled trial. They selected Staten Island for a 12-hour experiment, offering residents $5,000 to remain on the island while monitoring their behavior through tracking devices and cameras.
The experiment was far from organic. While the NFFA publicly framed the event as a way for citizens to release inhibitions, the reality was a top-down orchestration. Sociologist Dr. May Updale, who helped design the trial, eventually discovered that the government was actively tampering with the results. To ensure the experiment appeared successful, NFFA chief of staff Arlo Sabian deployed mercenary groups to kill civilians, aiming to eliminate the poor and reduce the burden of social programs.
The narrative centers on local figures like Dmitri Cimber, a businessman who organizes a defense against the mercenaries after realizing the NFFA had planted weapons to incite chaos. The film depicts the brutal intersection of political corruption and survival, ultimately showing how the NFFA used the manufactured success of the Staten Island trial to justify a nationwide expansion of the Purge the following year. It serves as a dark origin story for the franchise, highlighting how institutional power can weaponize social unrest.
Critically, the film received mixed reviews, holding a 55% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 54/100 score on Metacritic. Despite the polarized reception, it became the highest-grossing entry in the series, earning $137 million worldwide against a $13 million production budget. Its release on July 4, 2018, underscored its thematic focus on American politics, with many observers noting its pointed critique of the contemporary political climate.
