A supernatural horror remake that haunted critics more than its intended audience
In short: When the 2005 remake of The Fog arrived, it promised vengeful spirits and a dark history. Instead, it became a cautionary tale of cinematic failure. Produced by the original film's creators, the project struggled to find its footing, ultimately earning a reputation as one of the most disappointing horror remakes.
Directed by Rupert Wainwright, the 2005 version of The Fog reimagines the 1980 classic by John Carpenter. The narrative centers on Antonio Island, an Oregon town unknowingly built upon a foundation of blood. In 1871, four residents betrayed William Blake, a wealthy man attempting to establish a leper colony, by looting and burning his ship, the Elizabeth Dane. Over a century later, the vengeful spirits of those murdered mariners return to reclaim their stolen fortune, targeting the descendants of the original conspirators.
Despite the involvement of Carpenter and Debra Hill as producers, the film faced immediate backlash. Critics panned the production for its lack of suspense and originality, with review aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes recording a mere 4% approval rating. The film was not screened for critics prior to its release, a move that preceded its poor reception. Publications such as The Hollywood Reporter and Variety noted that the film failed to generate genuine scares or meaningful character investment, while Entertainment Weekly awarded it a D-.
The production process itself was fraught with challenges. Filmed primarily in British Columbia, Canada, the project was green-lit before the script was finalized. Actors like Selma Blair endured grueling physical conditions, including spending twelve hours in a water tank for underwater sequences. Ultimately, the film earned $46.2 million worldwide, a figure that failed to salvage its critical standing. Its legacy remains defined by its poor reception, culminating in dubious honors like the Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Worst Film and the Stinkers Bad Movie Award for Least Scary Horror Movie.
