The remake that critics claimed was 'not contagious'
In short: In 2016, a horror remake arrived with a script that was nearly a beat-for-beat copy of its predecessor. Despite a high-profile cast and a director attempting to polish the original's rough edges, the film faced a rare level of critical consensus: it was almost universally loathed.
The 2016 production of Cabin Fever was born from a chance encounter at an Academy Awards bar between producers Cassian Elwes and Evan Astrowsky and original writer Eli Roth. While the project initially aimed to expand the franchise into a Caribbean-based trilogy titled Cabin Fever: Outbreak, those plans were eventually scrapped in favor of a direct remake of the 2002 original. Director Travis Zariwny was tasked with adapting the script, which he ultimately trimmed from 124 pages down to 92 to remove comedic elements and make the characters more likable.
Despite these creative adjustments—including gender-swapping the role of Deputy Winston to be played by Louise Linton—the film struggled to find an audience. It premiered on February 12, 2016, via IFC Midnight, and quickly became a statistical outlier in film criticism. On Rotten Tomatoes, it secured a rare 0% approval rating from 30 reviews, while Metacritic recorded a dismal score of 14 out of 100.
Critics were particularly harsh on the film's lack of innovation. The Los Angeles Times noted that the remake 'dumbed down' the original, while The Guardian described it as 'tired and cynical.' Even the original creator, Eli Roth, served as an executive producer, a move Variety critics suggested ensured the film would remain a 'repurposed dud' rather than an improvement on the source material.
The narrative follows a group of friends whose vacation is ruined by a flesh-eating disease contracted from a hermit named Henry. The infection spreads through bites and contact, leading to a series of gruesome deaths involving a Belgian Malinois dog named Dr. Mambo and a local store owner named Tommy. Ultimately, the film serves as a case study in the difficulties of reviving a cult classic through literal replication.
