In short: The Founder chronicles the ruthless rise of Ray Kroc, who turned a local California restaurant into a worldwide phenomenon. By shifting from a food-service model to a real estate strategy, Kroc systematically pushed out the original McDonald brothers, ultimately building a corporate giant that now feeds one percent of the world.

In 1954, Ray Kroc, a struggling salesman of milkshake machines, visited San Bernardino, California, to meet Richard and Maurice McDonald. He was captivated by their efficient restaurant operation, which had been redesigned in 1948 to minimize overhead and maximize speed. Seeing immense potential, Kroc convinced the brothers to expand through franchising. However, early attempts to scale the business under the brothers' original model struggled until Kroc met Harry Sonneborn, a former financial executive.

Sonneborn identified that the brothers' restrictive contract terms prevented the business from scaling effectively. He proposed a pivot: instead of merely collecting franchise fees, the company should own the land on which the restaurants were built. This real estate model allowed Kroc to gain leverage over his franchisees and eventually the McDonald brothers themselves. In 1955, Kroc incorporated the Franchise Realty Corporation, which later became the McDonald's Corporation, to facilitate this aggressive expansion.

The film highlights the moral cost of this success. Kroc eventually forced the brothers out, buying them out for $2.7 million. Crucially, he promised them 1% of future profits via a handshake agreement—a deal he never honored. Had he paid, the brothers would have earned over $100 million annually. Kroc admitted he coveted the name 'McDonald's' because it sounded quintessentially American, unlike his own Slavic surname. While the film portrays Kroc's persistence, it also serves as a cautionary tale about the ruthless nature of corporate ambition and the erasure of the original founders' legacy.
