In short: Wes Anderson’s 2021 anthology film brings the fictional Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun to life through three distinct, visually stunning tales. Inspired by his deep affection for The New Yorker, the film serves as a portrait of journalists fighting to write their truth within the charming, grimy streets of Ennui-sur-Blasé.

The French Dispatch follows the final issue of a fictional American magazine based in the French town of Ennui-sur-Blasé. Following the death of editor Arthur Howitzer Jr. in 1975, the staff compiles a farewell edition featuring an obituary and four distinct articles. These segments explore diverse subjects: a cycling tour of the town, the rise of a mentally disturbed artist, a student-led 'Chessboard Revolution', and a high-stakes kidnapping involving a police commissioner’s son.

The film’s production was a massive undertaking, filmed in Angoulême, France, between November 2018 and March 2019. Production designer Adam Stockhausen and his team constructed over 125 sets, often utilizing miniatures and foreground sets to achieve Anderson’s signature symmetry. To capture a specific, grimy aesthetic, the crew sourced furniture from flea markets and estate liquidators, while cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman shot on 35 mm film using classic methods, favoring the Academy ratio to evoke the French films that inspired the project.

Beyond the visuals, the film is a tribute to the literary world. Many characters are based on real-life figures from The New Yorker, such as Harold Ross, A. J. Liebling, and Joseph Mitchell. The score, composed by Alexandre Desplat, further emphasizes this eclectic spirit by pairing unusual instruments like the bassoon and tuba. Despite pandemic-related delays, the film premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and grossed approximately $47.4 million worldwide, earning praise for its hand-crafted aesthetic and eccentric performances.
