In this classic French comedy, extraterrestrial robots invade a sunny seaside town.
In short: Louis de Funès returns as the bumbling Ludovic Cruchot in a sci-fi farce set in Saint-Tropez. When metallic aliens arrive to study humanity, they use shapeshifting to infiltrate the local police force. Cruchot must find a way to expose these robotic imposters before they replace the entire town's population.
The Gendarme and the Extra-Terrestrials, released as Le Gendarme et Les Extraterrestres, serves as the penultimate entry in the long-running Gendarme film series. The plot centers on Ludovic Cruchot, played by Louis de Funès, who becomes the only officer to suspect an alien presence after witnessing a flying saucer near Saint-Tropez. These visitors from space possess the ability to mimic the appearance of humans, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into the local police station.
The narrative relies on the absurdity of the gendarmes attempting to identify these invaders, who are revealed to be metallic robots. Cruchot initially attempts to expose them by striking them to hear a metallic sound, but the aliens prove difficult to track. The true nature of the threat is uncovered when the gendarmes observe the robots consuming machine oil and discover that water causes them to rust and eventually collapse. This leads to a chaotic sequence where the police attempt to douse the town's residents with water to flush out any hidden extraterrestrials.
The film culminates in a series of misunderstandings and slapstick confrontations. After the gendarmes build a decoy saucer to trap the invaders, a final battle ensues involving laser vision and water-based weaponry. The resolution is characteristically ironic: the real gendarmes accidentally board the actual alien craft, which loses power and crashes into the sea, while the alien imposters are left behind to be celebrated as heroes at a parade before their metallic bodies finally fail. The series concludes with the subsequent film, Le Gendarme et les Gendarmettes.
