In short: In a post-apocalyptic future, humanity is nearly extinct, ravaged by a parasitic fungus that turns people into mindless zombies. The only hope for a cure lies in a group of captive, infected children who retain their intelligence. One girl, Melanie, discovers that her kind represents the future of the world.

Released in 2016, The Girl with All the Gifts is a British post-apocalyptic adventure directed by Colm McCarthy and written by Mike Carey, based on his own novel. The narrative follows a desperate journey through a landscape dominated by 'hungries'—humans infected by a fungus transmitted through bodily fluids. While the infected are typically mindless, a second generation of 'neonates' born to infected mothers possesses a symbiotic relationship with the fungus, allowing them to crave living flesh while still retaining the capacity to learn and think.

The film centers on Melanie, an exceptional young girl held at an army base in the Home Counties. Alongside a scientist, a teacher, and a group of soldiers, she navigates a ruined London to escape a base overrun by the infected. As the group uncovers a massive fungal growth at the BT Tower capable of releasing humanity-ending spores, the conflict intensifies. Dr. Caroline Caldwell, the scientist, views Melanie as a specimen for vaccine research, while Melanie eventually realizes that she and her peers are not experiments, but the successors to a dying human race.

The production utilized unique locations to capture its desolate aesthetic, with aerial shots of a deserted London filmed in the abandoned town of Pripyat, Ukraine. With a budget of £4 million, the film received significant support from the BFI Film Fund and Creative England. Critics largely praised the work, noting its ability to inject fresh, thought-provoking ideas into the well-worn zombie genre. The title itself serves as a nod to the Greek myth of Pandora, a theme reinforced by the character of Helen Justineau, who serves as the children's teacher and a classics scholar.

The film concludes with a stark shift in power. After Melanie releases a cloud of spores from the fungal pods, the world is transformed, leaving the remaining humans confined while the hybrid children establish a new order. The story ends with Justineau, trapped in a mobile lab, continuing to educate the children who now dominate the planet, marking the definitive end of the old human era.
