In short: Jeff VanderMeer’s 2014 novel follows a twelve expedition into a supernatural zone that removes human pollution. As a team of four women surveys this coastal landscape, they discover a terrifying biological truth: the ecosystem may be transforming humans into something else entirely.

A biologist's field notes recount events occurring within Area X, a state-governed coastal zone that has remained inaccessible to civilians for thirty years. The biologist's team—comprising a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a military-trained surveyor—is the twelfth expedition to attempt to survey this strange ecosystem. Previous attempts ended in disappearances, suicides, mental trauma, or aggressive cancers. The mission is documented through the biologist's personal field journal. This twelfth attempt follows several failed missions that collapsed due to various psychological and physical ailments.

Central to the mystery is the 'Crawler,' an entity that leaves cursive writing made of fungal material on the walls of an unmapped bunker known as the Tower. During her investigation, the biologist accidentally inhales fungal spores, which may render her immune to the psychologist's regular hypnotic conditioning. This biological interference leads to a terrifying realization: the Crawler's presence is linked to human matter, and samples of the area's flora and fauna are found to be composed of human cells. The team's leader uses hypnosis to ground the members against potential hallucinations. However, the biologist's exposure to spores might have altered her perception of reality.

The novel explores the concept of biological mimicry and transformation. The biologist hypothesizes that while humans enter Area X and are gradually transformed into new forms, something from the zone may also be transforming into humans in turn. This theme of shifting identities is reinforced when the biologist encounters the Crawler, which she eventually recognizes as a transformed version of a lighthouse keeper from an old photograph. The narrative concludes with the biologist deciding to explore the coastline to find the zone's limits. She seeks to uncover the truth behind the mysterious transformations.
