A calculated quest for vengeance: how a school bullying survivor dismantles her tormentors' lives
In short: The Glory is a South Korean psychological thriller that follows Moon Dong-eun, a woman who dedicates her adulthood to systematically destroying the group that brutalized her in high school. This Netflix series, which achieved global viewership success, blends dark drama with a meticulous, long-term plan for retribution.
The narrative centers on Moon Dong-eun, who endures horrific physical and emotional abuse at Sunghan High School. After being forced to drop out, she spends years preparing for a complex revenge scheme. Her path eventually leads her to become a homeroom teacher at the elementary school attended by the child of her primary bully, Yeon-jin. This proximity allows Dong-eun to infiltrate the lives of her former tormentors, exposing their secrets and turning their own social status and moral failings against them.
The series is divided into two parts, released in December 2022 and March 2023. It features an ensemble cast, including Song Hye-kyo as the determined protagonist and Lim Ji-yeon as the ringleader of the bullying group. The story is not merely a fictional construct; some scenes draw inspiration from a 2006 incident in Cheongju, South Korea, where a student was subjected to prolonged extortion and physical violence. This grounding in reality adds a chilling weight to the show's exploration of trauma and justice.
Beyond the central conflict, the show weaves in secondary characters like Yeo-jeong, a plastic surgeon who aids Dong-eun while pursuing his own quest for justice, and Hyeon-nam, a domestic abuse survivor who provides intelligence in exchange for her freedom. The series has been widely praised for its sharp writing and visual style, earning critical acclaim and significant viewership. By the time the story concludes, the characters are forced to face the consequences of their past actions, mirroring the suffering they once inflicted on others.
