How Jim Henson turned a jewel heist into a meta-theatrical Muppet musical masterpiece
In short: Released in 1981, The Great Muppet Caper remains the only feature film directed by Jim Henson. It follows Kermit, Fozzie, and Gonzo to London, where they stumble into a high-stakes jewel robbery. The production pushed puppetry boundaries, featuring complex bicycle stunts and waterproof puppets designed for underwater sequences.
The Great Muppet Caper was conceived during the final season of The Muppet Show, with Jim Henson aiming to create an homage to classic movie musicals. The script underwent several title iterations, including Muppet Mania and A Froggy Day in London, before settling on the final name suggested by Henson's daughter, Lisa. Filming took place over twenty weeks between the autumn of 1980 and early 1981, resulting in a production that blended traditional puppetry with ambitious new technical effects.
Technical innovation was central to the film's visual identity. To replicate the bicycle-riding feat from 1979's The Muppet Movie, puppeteers Faz Fazakas and Brian Henson utilized radio-controlled bicycles and marionette rigging. For Miss Piggy’s underwater scenes, the team developed specialized waterproof puppets made of compressed urethane foam. Because the material was prone to tearing, the workshop produced approximately 40 heads and seven bodies for the character, with designers reportedly finding amusement in destroying the damaged heads after each take.
Critical reception was mixed but generally favorable. While some reviewers like Roger Ebert and Sheila Benson criticized the film for its formulaic plot and lack of a 'cutting edge,' others praised the chemistry between Kermit and Miss Piggy. Vincent Canby of The New York Times famously compared their dynamic to the legendary pairing of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. Despite grossing $31.2 million—only half the total of its predecessor—the film maintains a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and remains a beloved entry in the Muppet canon, having been re-released for its 40th anniversary in 2021.
