In short: In 1986, the sitcom Valerie seemed like a standard family comedy. But a high-stakes legal battle over syndication profits led to the lead actress being fired, her character being killed off, and a complete rebranding of the entire series.

The series, originally titled Valerie, followed Valerie Harper as a working mother balancing an auction house career with raising three teenage sons. While the show found success on NBC—notably jumping in the Nielsen ratings after moving to Monday nights in March 1987—it was derailed by a bitter financial conflict. Following a refusal by producers and NBC to grant per-episode salary increases and a larger share of future syndication revenue, Harper and her husband, Tony Cacciotti, walked out on the production.

The dispute became a public feud. NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff even threatened to replace Harper if the struggle continued, eventually suggesting Sandy Duncan as a successor. Although Harper and Cacciotti won a legal battle against Lorimar on September 16, 1988, receiving $1.82 million in damages, the damage to the show's continuity was done. Harper left the series, and her character was killed off at the start of the third season. Sandy Duncan joined the cast as the boys' aunt, effectively stepping into the maternal role.

This cast upheaval forced a series of identity shifts. The show was briefly retitled Valerie's Family: The Hogans before settling on The Hogan Family. The series eventually moved from NBC to CBS for its sixth and final season in late 1990, but poor ratings led to its cancellation in December 1990. Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, the show remains a notable piece of television history, even featuring the first use of the word 'condom' on prime-time television during a 1987 episode.
