In short: In the 2016 television series The K2, a former special forces operative framed for murder finds himself entangled in the dangerous world of presidential politics. Hired to protect a secret, reclusive daughter, he must navigate a web of betrayal, ambition, and lethal power struggles that define the elite of Seoul.

The K2 follows Kim Je-ha, a former mercenary for the PMC Blackstone who flees to South Korea after being falsely accused of killing his lover in Iraq. His combat skills catch the eye of Choi Yoo-jin, the ambitious wife of presidential candidate Jang Se-joon. She recruits him into JSS Security under the codename K2, tasking him with guarding Go An-na, Jang’s hidden, illegitimate daughter. An-na, who suffers from social phobia and PTSD, has lived in exile in Spain, constantly monitored by her stepmother.

The series explores the brutal intersection of personal desire and political maneuvering. While Je-ha initially seeks revenge against Park Kwan-soo, the rival politician responsible for his lover's death, his loyalties shift as he develops a protective bond with An-na. Meanwhile, Yoo-jin, a disinherited chaebol heiress, ruthlessly manipulates those around her to secure her position as First Lady. The narrative is further complicated by Choi Sung-won, Yoo-jin’s half-brother, who plots to seize control of their family conglomerate, the JB Group, and the security agency.

Beyond its complex plot, the production is notable for its technical ambition. It was the first Korean drama to incorporate the Bullet Time visual effect and featured a diverse array of martial arts, including systema, taekwondo, aikido, and jujutsu. Lead actor Ji Chang-wook, who performed his own stunts, became the highest-paid actor for a tvN drama at the time. Filmed across locations in South Korea and Spain, the series resonated internationally, topping cable viewership ratings during its 2016 run and eventually reaching audiences in countries ranging from Japan to Israel.
