In short: When ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt moves into his uncle's creaky Michigan home, he discovers a hidden, rhythmic ticking within the walls. This is no ordinary clock; it is a sinister device built by a traumatized warlock to reverse human history, threatening to erase humanity and reset the world entirely.

Directed by Eli Roth and released in 2018, The House with a Clock in Its Walls adapts the 1973 book by John Bellairs. The story centers on Lewis, an orphan who discovers his uncle Jonathan and neighbor Florence are a warlock and witch. Their lives are haunted by the legacy of Isaac Izard, a former friend of Jonathan’s who returned from World War II deeply traumatized. Seeking relief from his visions of war, Isaac turned to the demon Azazel for the blueprints of a clock designed to undo human history.

The film’s production involved complex visual effects, including the construction of massive 10-foot and 14½-foot gears for the climactic Clock Room sequence. The narrative follows Lewis as he attempts to navigate school social dynamics and his own grief, eventually using a Magic 8 Ball—the only memento of his parents—to locate the clock hidden beneath the boiler room. The clock’s key is revealed to be made from the bones of Mrs. Hanchett, who was murdered and replaced by Isaac’s wife, Selena.

Commercially, the film was a success, grossing $131.5 million worldwide against a $42 million production budget. Critics offered mixed-to-positive reviews, noting that while the cast—including Jack Black and Cate Blanchett—was excellent, the film did not fully realize its potential. Despite the darker themes of necromancy and existential erasure, the film maintains a family-friendly tone, earning a B+ grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore.
