A group of journalists once attempted to capture a notorious war criminal for sport.
In short: The 2007 film The Hunting Party depicts a wild, satirical manhunt for a Bosnian war criminal. While the movie leans into Hollywood absurdity, it is loosely inspired by a real 2000 magazine article about five reporters who decided to track down Radovan Karadžić over drinks in a Sarajevo bar.
The film, directed by Richard Shepard, follows a disgraced journalist and his crew as they mistake their own bumbling investigation for a CIA operation. The narrative is framed by a disclaimer noting that only the most outlandish elements of the plot are grounded in reality. In the movie, the journalists pursue a fictional character nicknamed The Fox, eventually leading to a violent, vigilante-style conclusion that contrasts sharply with the actual, prolonged international search for real-world fugitives.
The source material, Scott Anderson’s Esquire article, details a far more cynical reality. In April 2000, five Western journalists—including Anderson, Sebastian Junger, and John Falk—embarked on a half-hearted pursuit of Radovan Karadžić. Their journey was fueled by sensationalist local reporting and a series of bizarre encounters with UN and Serbian officials who were convinced the journalists were a covert American hit squad. Anderson concluded that international bodies like NATO and the UN were not merely failing to find the fugitive, but were actively obstructing efforts to do so.
Critical reception of the film was polarized. Some reviewers praised its gonzo, hair-trigger energy, while others criticized its uneven tone, which struggled to balance dark satire with serious political thriller elements. Despite the star power of Richard Gere and Terrence Howard, the film was a commercial disappointment in the United States, grossing less than US$1 million domestically. Its release sparked varied reactions globally, ranging from praise for its political message in Sarajevo to indifference and hostility in the Serbian entity of Bosnia, where audiences largely ignored the premiere.
