Can a Category 5 hurricane provide the perfect cover for a massive bank heist?
In short: In the 2018 action film The Hurricane Heist, a band of rogue treasury agents attempts to steal 600 million dollars from a cash storage facility during a catastrophic storm. The plot follows a meteorologist and a treasury agent as they fight to survive both the elements and the criminals.
Directed by Rob Cohen and released in March 2018, The Hurricane Heist centers on the town of Gulfport, Alabama. The story begins with a flashback to 1992, where a Category 5 hurricane named Andrew tragically claims the life of the protagonists' father. Decades later, another massive storm, Tammy, threatens the same town, creating a chaotic environment that corrupt treasury agent Connor Perkins intends to exploit to loot a federal facility.
The heist relies on a high-stakes plan to crack a vault code while the town is under siege by extreme weather. Perkins enlists hackers to brute-force the security system using a transmission tower, while the facility's maintenance worker, Breeze, and his brother, a meteorologist named Will, become entangled in the conflict alongside treasury agent Casey Corbyn. The film utilizes a specialized storm research vehicle, the Dominator, as the heroes navigate the storm surge and engage in shootouts with the mercenaries.
Critical reception for the film was largely unfavorable, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 47 percent approval rating and Metacritic assigning a score of 35 out of 100. Critics described the production as a middling throwback to overblown action thrillers. Despite the negative reviews, some commentators found ironic value in the film's absurdity, noting its strange mix of survival action and dialogue regarding football and the Second Amendment.
Financially, the project struggled to find its audience. Produced on an estimated budget of 35 million dollars, the film grossed only 33.2 million dollars worldwide. Its domestic opening weekend was particularly underwhelming, earning just 3 million dollars against initial projections of 7 million dollars. The film was distributed in the United States by Entertainment Studios and saw a release in the UK as a Sky Cinema Original.
