The final collaboration of a legendary director and his last unfinished Hollywood story
In short: Elia Kazan’s 1976 romantic drama, The Last Tycoon, marked the director’s final film and a rare adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s incomplete novel. Starring Robert De Niro as a studio executive based on Irving Thalberg, the production was a high-profile endeavor that struggled to capture the acclaim of earlier works.
The Last Tycoon was the second collaboration between director Elia Kazan and producer Sam Spiegel, following their 1954 success, On the Waterfront. Bringing Fitzgerald’s unfinished story to the screen was a three-year process, with two years dedicated solely to the screenplay written by Harold Pinter. The film features an ensemble cast including Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, and Robert Mitchum, centering on Monroe Stahr, a young, creative production chief navigating the pressures of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
The narrative follows Stahr’s professional and personal unraveling, from managing studio labor disputes and writers' strikes to his haunting, doomed romance with Kathleen Moore, a woman who reminds him of his deceased wife. The film’s production was marked by significant effort, including a rating appeal that successfully changed the film’s status from R to PG. Despite this, the final result was met with mixed critical reception upon its release in November 1976.
Critics were divided on the film’s effectiveness. Vincent Canby of The New York Times praised its ability to preserve the intelligence and mood of Fitzgerald’s original work, noting that the movie felt like history unfolding. Conversely, others like Charles Champlin and Pauline Kael found the film disappointing, criticizing its lethargic pace, the romantic subplot, and a perceived lack of subtlety in Kazan’s direction. While it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction, the film remains a polarizing final chapter in Kazan’s storied career.
