Why a Los Angeles defense attorney conducts his legal practice from a Lincoln Town Car
In short: Mickey Haller is a criminal defense lawyer who eschews a traditional office for the backseat of a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Town Car. When he takes on a wealthy playboy accused of assault, he uncovers a dangerous web of deception that forces him to confront his own past professional failures.
Directed by Brad Furman and released in 2011, The Lincoln Lawyer is a legal thriller adapted from Michael Connelly’s 2005 novel. The film follows Mickey Haller, a Los Angeles attorney who represents low-end criminals while operating out of his car. His life takes a sharp turn when he is hired by Mary Windsor to defend her son, Louis Roulet, against charges of brutally beating a woman named Regina Campo. Haller’s investigator, Frank Levin, soon discovers evidence linking Roulet to a previous murder case that Haller had handled years earlier.
In that earlier case, Haller had convinced his client, Jesus Martinez, to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty, despite Martinez’s claims of innocence. Upon meeting Roulet, Haller realizes his new client is the true killer. Roulet, aware of Haller’s past, attempts to use attorney-client privilege to silence him, threatening Haller’s family and eventually murdering the investigator, Levin. The film explores the moral complexities of the legal system, as Haller must navigate these ethical constraints while working to secure justice for Martinez and protect his own family from the manipulative Roulet and his mother.
The film was well-received by critics, holding an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $87.7 million globally. Author Michael Connelly, who viewed a rough cut in November 2010, praised the adaptation for its loyalty to his original story and the performance of Matthew McConaughey. While some reviewers, such as Roger Ebert, noted that the plot follows familiar genre conventions, it remains widely regarded as a brisk and engaging piece of entertainment. The story concludes with Haller successfully exposing the true culprits, leading to the exoneration of Martinez and the eventual arrest of Roulet.
