In short: Released in 1973, The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob is a masterpiece of slapstick that balances absurd humor with a message of tolerance. Despite its massive success, the film's debut was marred by a tragic, real-world hijacking attempt by a woman who believed the movie was culturally insensitive.

Directed by Gérard Oury and starring Louis de Funès, the film follows Victor Pivert, a prejudiced businessman who finds himself forced into an unlikely alliance with an Arab revolutionary. To escape assassins and police, the pair disguise themselves as rabbis, leading to a series of chaotic misunderstandings and a memorable Hasidic dance sequence. The film is celebrated for its rapid-fire gags and its ability to remain politically incorrect while maintaining a lighthearted, satirical spirit.

The production's release was shadowed by a bizarre and violent event. Danielle Cravenne, the wife of the film's publicist, hijacked an Air France jet traveling from Paris to Egypt. Armed with a small-caliber rifle and a replica handgun, she demanded the film be pulled from theaters, arguing that its release during the Yom Kippur War was inappropriate. The standoff ended in Marseille when police, posing as ground crew, boarded the aircraft and fatally shot the 35-year-old hijacker.

Despite the tragedy, the film proceeded to theaters and achieved universal acclaim. It topped the French box office in 1973, selling over 7.2 million tickets, and saw record-breaking success in countries including Germany, Israel, and Canada. Critics have compared its comedic energy to the work of Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers, noting its rare ability to sustain high-intensity slapstick without losing its charm or its underlying theme of reconciliation between different cultures and faiths.
