How a Mumbai delivery error inspired a globally acclaimed, Oscar-controversial cinematic romance
In short: In Mumbai, the legendary dabbawala lunch delivery system is famous for its near-perfect efficiency. But when a rare mix-up delivers a housewife's tiffin to the wrong man, it sparks a tender, epistolary romance. This 2013 film became a worldwide hit, despite a bitter controversy over its failed Oscar nomination.
Director Ritesh Batra originally intended to film a documentary about Mumbai's dabbawalas, whose complex delivery network moves thousands of lunches daily. After spending a week with them in 2007, he overheard intimate conversations while the workers waited outside apartment buildings. These overheard fragments of life inspired him to pivot from documentary to fiction, resulting in the 2013 film The Lunchbox.
The narrative follows Ila, a neglected housewife, and Saajan, a lonely widower approaching retirement. Their connection begins when a misdelivered lunchbox leads to an exchange of handwritten notes. The film, which stars Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur, was praised for its nuanced portrayal of loneliness and human connection. It achieved significant international success, grossing approximately $25 million worldwide and becoming a critical darling with a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite its acclaim, the film became the center of a national controversy in India. Many critics and industry figures expected it to be India's official entry for the 86th Academy Awards. However, the Film Federation of India selected a different film, The Good Road. The chairman of the selection committee later suggested that the media's constant, overwhelming support for The Lunchbox created a 'manufacturing consent' effect, which caused the jury to rebel against the perceived pressure. The Good Road ultimately failed to receive an Oscar nomination.
The film's legacy continues to evolve, with a musical adaptation currently in development. Commissioned by the Lincoln Center Theater, the stage version is being written by Batra and is scheduled to premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in May 2026, directed by Rachel Chavkin.
