A spy comedy that bombed at the box office but found a strange premise
In short: In the 1997 film The Man Who Knew Too Little, Bill Murray plays an ordinary man who accidentally intercepts a hitman's phone call. Believing he has joined an immersive improv theatre experience, he navigates a real-world international conspiracy, blissfully unaware that the danger he faces is entirely lethal.
Directed by Jon Amiel and released in 1997, the film follows Wallace Ritchie, who travels from Des Moines to London to visit his brother. Through a series of misunderstandings, Wallace is mistaken for a professional assassin. While he assumes his involvement in a crime drama is part of a local interactive theatre service, he is actually wandering through a plot involving Russian agents, British ministers, and a hidden bomb inside a Matryoshka doll.
The screenplay, penned by Robert Farrar and Howard Franklin, was adapted from Farrar's own novel, Watch That Man. Farrar conceived the story after hearing about the popularity of live-action role-playing games in 1980s England. He wondered what might happen if a participant dialed the wrong number and became entangled in a genuine criminal enterprise. Despite this high-concept premise, the film struggled to find an audience, grossing only $13.7 million against a $20 million production budget.
Critical reception was largely negative upon release. Reviewers like Lawrence Van Gelder of The New York Times criticized the film for relying on repetitive wordplay and failing to execute its ambitious blend of Hitchcockian suspense and slapstick comedy. Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune described it as a misfire that failed to utilize its cast effectively. With a 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is often remembered as a box office disappointment that failed to capitalize on the comedic reputation Bill Murray had built since his earlier work in Ghostbusters.
