In short: The 2001 psychological thriller Domestic Disturbance featured a star-studded cast, yet it struggled to find its footing. Despite a high-profile release and a premise centered on a father uncovering his ex-wife's husband's dark secrets, the production became a financial disappointment that left both audiences and reviewers largely unimpressed.

Directed by Harold Becker, the film follows Frank, a boat builder who suspects his son's new stepfather, Rick Barnes, is a murderer. The narrative tension escalates when the son, Danny, witnesses Rick killing an associate named Ray Coleman. While the local community views Rick as a respectable figure, Frank eventually discovers that Rick is actually a criminal named Jack Parnell, who had previously framed his partners for his own illicit activities.

The film's path to the screen was marked by real-life drama. During production in Wilmington, North Carolina, in April 2001, actor Steve Buscemi was injured in a bar fight while attempting to assist his colleague Vince Vaughn. When the movie finally arrived in theaters on November 2, 2001, it failed to recoup its $75 million budget, ultimately grossing approximately $54 million worldwide. Critics were particularly harsh, with the film earning a 23% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 29 out of 100 on Metacritic.

The reception was so poor that John Travolta, one of the film's leads, received a nomination for a Razzie Award for his performance. Roger Ebert, who gave the film only one-and-a-half stars, famously noted that the final reel was so lackluster that even the addition of a musical score could not save it. Despite the negative critical consensus, the film remains a notable example of a high-budget thriller that failed to resonate with its intended audience, eventually moving to home video formats in September 2002.
