How a 2017 thriller dramatized the rise and fall of a Nazi architect
In short: The Man with the Iron Heart chronicles the ascent of Reinhard Heydrich, a pivotal Nazi figure who orchestrated genocide across Eastern Europe. Based on Laurent Binet’s novel HHhH, the film explores the brutal mechanics of the Third Reich and the daring Operation Anthropoid mission that ultimately targeted its leader in Prague.
Directed by Cédric Jimenez and released in 2017, the film—also known as Killing Heydrich or HHhH—traces the trajectory of Reinhard Heydrich from his early days as a disgraced German naval officer to his role as a central architect of the Holocaust. The narrative follows his marriage to Lina, his subsequent radicalization within the Nazi Party, and his rapid rise under Heinrich Himmler. As Chief of the Gestapo and later the Reich Security Main Office, Heydrich oversaw the Einsatzgruppen death squads and chaired the 1942 Wannsee Conference, where the Final Solution was formalized.
The film’s title, HHhH, is derived from a dark, contemporary quip circulating in Nazi Germany: Himmlers Hirn heißt Heydrich, or Himmler's brain is called Heydrich. This reflects the film's focus on the cold, bureaucratic efficiency Heydrich brought to the regime's genocidal ambitions. The production, which stars Jason Clarke as Heydrich and Rosamund Pike as Lina, was shot on location in Prague and Budapest between September 2015 and February 2016.
Critically, the film has been described as a visually striking work that struggles with structural cohesion, effectively functioning as two distinct hour-long segments. While it faced significant distribution hurdles—including the bankruptcy of the Weinstein Company, which originally acquired U.S. rights in 2015—the film eventually reached digital audiences in 2025. Despite its complex production history, it remains a notable attempt to dramatize the life of one of the most dangerous figures of the Second World War.
