How Marvel Studios built its first female-led superhero film from the ground up
In short: Released in 2019, Captain Marvel was a landmark project for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was the studio's first female-led film, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide. Beyond the box office, the production navigated complex creative challenges, including de-aging technology and a narrative structure that defied traditional superhero origin tropes.
Development of the film began in May 2013, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige prioritizing a new character to allow for a fresh origin story. The script underwent an extensive iterative process lasting over a year-and-a-half, as writers Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve worked to integrate Carol Danvers into the broader Phase Three plans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To avoid comparisons to DC Comics' Green Lantern, the team moved away from a traditional origin structure, opting to start the film with Danvers already possessing her powers.
The film is set in 1995, a choice that necessitated significant technical innovation. Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg, who reprise their roles as Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, were digitally de-aged by 25 years in post-production—the first time Marvel applied this process to an entire film. The production also leaned into the era's aesthetic, including the renaming of Danvers's cat from Chewie to Goose, a nod to the 1986 film Top Gun.
Casting Brie Larson as Carol Danvers was a central decision, with Feige noting her ability to balance the character's immense power with her humanity. Larson trained for nine months, learning judo, boxing, and wrestling, and visited Nellis Air Force Base to consult with active-duty pilots. The film's themes of resilience and self-discovery were heavily influenced by the writers' desire to portray failure as feedback rather than a character flaw, ensuring that Danvers's femininity remained a core component of her strength rather than an obstacle to overcome.
