In short: When The New Batman Adventures debuted in 1997, it abandoned the classic aesthetic of its predecessor for a streamlined, minimalist style. This shift was not merely artistic; it was a deliberate move to unify the DC Animated Universe and allow for more fluid, consistent animation across the network's growing superhero lineup.

Airing from September 1997 to January 1999, The New Batman Adventures served as the third and final season of the original animated series. Producers sought a fresh visual identity that aligned with the simultaneously airing Superman: The Animated Series. This resulted in a radical redesign: Batman lost his yellow chest emblem and blue cape highlights, adopting a darker, sleeker suit reminiscent of Batman: Year One. Even Bruce Wayne received a makeover, with his hair brushed back and his eyes changed from black to blue.

The series also pivoted away from a Batman-centric narrative to emphasize his supporting cast, particularly Batgirl, Robin, and Nightwing. Batgirl, voiced by Tara Strong, became a central figure, appearing more frequently than any other partner. Meanwhile, the new Robin, Tim Drake, was given an origin story that blended elements of both the comic book Tim Drake and the tragic Jason Todd, as producers opted not to adapt the violent A Death in the Family storyline. This focus on a family unit allowed for more complex character dynamics.

Villains were not spared from the overhaul. The Joker’s design, featuring white eyes with black sclera, proved divisive among fans, eventually leading to further adjustments in later projects. Other rogues, such as the Scarecrow and Killer Croc, received significant visual updates to match the show's darker tone. Despite these changes, the production team enjoyed greater creative freedom compared to their time at Fox Kids, as the Kids' WB censors were notably more flexible regarding content and storytelling, allowing the team to push the boundaries of their animated Gotham City.
