How a Viking Revenge Epic Found Redemption Through the Digital Home Market
In short: Robert Eggers’ 2022 film The Northman was a critical darling that struggled to find its footing in a post-pandemic theatrical landscape. Despite a massive budget and a star-studded cast, the film underperformed at the box office, only to find an unexpected second life through VOD and home media sales.
Directed by Robert Eggers and co-written with Sjón, The Northman is a dark fantasy epic rooted in the legend of Amleth, a tale originally recorded by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus. The film follows an exiled Viking prince on a brutal quest for vengeance against his uncle, Fjölnir, who murdered his father. To ensure historical authenticity, Eggers collaborated with experts including archaeologist Neil Price and historian Jóhanna Katrín Friðriksdóttir, while drawing inspiration from various Norse sagas and the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian.
The production was a massive undertaking, with filming spanning 87 days across Iceland and Ireland. Despite the meticulous attention to detail—which included using period-accurate instruments like the tagelharpa for the score—the film faced significant financial hurdles. With a production budget estimated between $70 and $90 million, the film grossed only $69.6 million worldwide. Critics noted that the film's release alongside other major titles and the shifting habits of post-COVID audiences contributed to its underwhelming theatrical performance.
However, the film’s narrative of failure was short-lived. By leveraging the Premium VOD market, The Northman managed to approach a break-even point. It topped digital rental charts upon release and dominated the Blu-ray and DVD sales charts in June 2022. While some critics, such as those at The New Yorker, felt the film lacked depth, others praised its visceral world-building and uncompromising vision. Ultimately, the project stands as a case study in how modern distribution models can rescue high-budget, auteur-driven cinema from the volatility of traditional box office metrics.
