The 1997 thriller that launched a studio and redefined the Hollywood opening logo
In short: Before DreamWorks became a household name, it needed a hit to prove its viability. The Peacemaker, a high-stakes nuclear thriller starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman, was the studio's inaugural release. It introduced the world to the iconic CGI logo and set the stage for a new Hollywood era.
When DreamWorks Pictures was formed, the studio faced intense pressure from financiers because it lacked live-action films in production. Co-founder Steven Spielberg was occupied with The Lost World: Jurassic Park, leaving the studio to look elsewhere for its debut. The Peacemaker, based on the book One Point Safe by Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, was the most prepared script, making it the natural choice for the studio's first greenlit project.
The film was directed by Mimi Leder, a choice that surprised many at the time. Leder was known for her television work on ER, and The Peacemaker marked her feature film debut. Spielberg’s decision to hire her was unconventional, as she had only directed made-for-television movies previously. Despite the pressure of launching a new studio, Leder focused on keeping the action grounded, filming sequences in locations ranging from Slovakia to New York City.
The film’s release in September 1997 was a significant event, featuring the debut of a 25-second CGI logo accompanied by music from John Williams. While critics were divided—some praising the film's pacing and technical execution while others criticized its reliance on genre clichés—it performed well enough to reach the number one spot at the domestic box office. The film earned over $110 million globally, establishing a foundation for the studio's future.
The legacy of The Peacemaker has shifted over time. It was pulled from a scheduled 2001 television broadcast following the September 11 attacks, and in 2006, its rights were acquired by Viacom as part of a massive deal for the DreamWorks library. Today, it remains a historical footnote in Hollywood, representing the ambitious, high-stakes beginnings of a studio that would eventually reshape the animation and live-action landscape.
