Can a clumsy detective outsmart a global Dream Team to catch a master thief?
In short: In the 2009 comedy The Pink Panther 2, Inspector Clouseau is reassigned from parking duty to join an elite international task force. As priceless artifacts vanish, the bumbling detective must prove that his unique brand of chaos is the only thing standing between a master criminal and total victory.
Directed by Harald Zwart, The Pink Panther 2 serves as the eleventh installment in the long-running franchise. The plot follows Inspector Clouseau, played by Steve Martin, as he is pulled from his mundane duties by Chief Inspector Dreyfus to assist a 'Dream Team' of global investigators. This group includes experts from Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and India, all tasked with capturing a legendary thief known as The Tornado, who has emerged from a decade of inactivity to steal treasures like the Pope's ring.
The film’s production spanned several months in 2007, with principal photography taking place in Paris and various locations across Massachusetts and New Jersey. Despite a star-studded cast that included Jean Reno, Andy Garcia, Alfred Molina, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the film struggled to win over critics. It holds a 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers often dismissing the production as a collection of uninspired slapstick sequences. Commercially, the film also faced challenges, grossing approximately $76 million against a $70 million budget.
The narrative hinges on Clouseau’s unconventional methods. While his colleagues rely on traditional forensics and logic, Clouseau suspects the criminologist Sonia Solandres is the true culprit. He deduces this by identifying inconsistencies in her alibi and realizing that the Pink Panther diamond he was tasked to protect had been swapped for a replica before he even left France. The film concludes with a chaotic wedding ceremony, a hallmark of the series' slapstick tradition, and hints at the enduring nature of the franchise, which remains a subject of interest for future development by Amazon MGM Studios.
