How a rejected comedy script became a $75 million global box office smash
In short: In the early 1970s, major studios dismissed the idea of a new Pink Panther film, believing the careers of star Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards were over. Yet, through a unique financing deal, the project was resurrected, ultimately reviving a dormant franchise and cementing its place in comedy history.
The 1975 film The Return of the Pink Panther emerged from unlikely circumstances. After United Artists rejected an outline for a new entry, producer Lew Grade stepped in to finance the project as part of a complex deal involving his wife, Julie Andrews. Grade convinced a reluctant Peter Sellers to return to his iconic role as Inspector Clouseau, a character he had not played since 1964. The production, which began with a $2 million budget that eventually ballooned to $5 million, was filmed across locations including Switzerland, France, Morocco, and West Germany.
The plot centers on the theft of the Pink Panther diamond in the fictional nation of Lugash, leading to the reinstatement of the bumbling Clouseau. The film features a complex web of intrigue involving the thief Sir Charles Litton and Clouseau's obsessed superior, Chief Inspector Dreyfus, who secretly acts as a mysterious assassin attempting to eliminate the Inspector. The narrative culminates in a chaotic confrontation at a Gstaad hotel, where Dreyfus's failed assassination attempt leads to his own downfall and commitment to a lunatic asylum.
Upon its release, the film was a commercial triumph, earning $75 million worldwide. Critical reception was largely positive, with reviewers praising the slapstick performances and sight gags, though some critics felt it lacked the pathos of earlier installments. The film's success not only revitalized the series but also restored the professional reputations of both Sellers and Edwards. Its legacy has persisted through decades of home media releases, eventually finding its way into comprehensive Blu-ray collections, proving that the bungling Inspector remained a timeless comedic force.
