Why did a post-apocalyptic epic about mail delivery become a notorious Hollywood disaster?
In short: Kevin Costner’s 1997 film The Postman attempted to turn a post-apocalyptic landscape into a hopeful fairy tale about the power of community. Despite its ambitious scope and message, the project was savaged by critics and failed spectacularly at the box office, eventually becoming a cautionary tale of cinematic overreach.
Based on David Brin’s 1985 novel, the film follows a nameless wanderer who assumes the identity of a government postal carrier to survive in a fractured, neo-feudal United States. By delivering letters, he inadvertently inspires a movement that challenges a tyrannical militia leader, General Bethlehem. While Brin hoped the film would capture the pro-community spirit of Field of Dreams, the final product was widely perceived as a self-indulgent, three-hour epic that lacked the intended emotional resonance.
The production faced immediate backlash for its perceived sentimentality and the director’s decision to cast himself in the lead role. Critics, including Roger Ebert, labeled the film pretentious and goofy, with some reviewers mocking Costner’s tendency to center himself in his own projects. Despite a budget of $80 million, the film earned only $30 million worldwide. Its poor reception was cemented when it swept the Golden Raspberry Awards, winning five categories including Worst Picture.
Beyond the critical failure, the film struggled with its own identity. Costner defended the work as a modern-day fairy tale about a humble liar who becomes a hero, yet the audience response remained largely negative. Decades later, the film continues to be cited as a significant misstep in Hollywood history. Even the author, who initially felt thrilled by the casting, saw his vision transformed into a project that failed to connect with the public, ultimately serving as a stark example of how high-budget ambition can misfire.
