Why the 2010 film The Runaways is a coming-of-age story, not a true biography
In short: Director Floria Sigismondi chose to frame her 2010 film The Runaways as a personal coming-of-age narrative rather than a literal band history. By focusing on the intense relationship between Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, the film captures the raw, chaotic energy of being young, female, and famous in 1970s Los Angeles.
Based on Cherie Currie’s 1989 memoir Neon Angel, the film depicts the band's 1975 formation and eventual dissolution. Sigismondi, making her feature directorial debut, intentionally narrowed the scope to the dynamic between Currie and Jett. Producers Art and John Linson supported this vision, believing the story of two girls entering a man's world required a female director’s perspective. Joan Jett, who served as an executive producer, noted that the film is a parallel narrative rather than a strict biopic, capturing the glam and intensity of the era.
To achieve a raw, authentic visual style, Sigismondi shot on Super-16 film. The color palette was carefully curated: it begins with bright, California-inspired tones, shifts to a trippy, metallic aesthetic during the band's time in Japan, and ends with a tougher, desaturated look. The cast, including Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart, underwent rigorous preparation, taking vocal lessons and learning to play their instruments. Fanning even performed on stage with the band Living Things to understand the power of live music.
The film received generally favorable reviews, with critics frequently praising the performances of Fanning, Stewart, and Michael Shannon. However, it faced criticism for being underwritten and relying on familiar rock-movie tropes. Cherie Currie herself acknowledged that while the film is a compelling portrayal, it remains a 'lighter flash' of the band's history, noting that the true story of the Runaways is an epic that could never be fully captured in a ninety-minute film. Despite its critical reception, the movie struggled at the box office, grossing around $4.6 million worldwide after a limited release.
