Why The Rundown’s Director Chose Old-School Pain Over Modern Action Movie Slickness
In short: When Peter Berg directed the 2003 action-comedy The Rundown, he found modern fight scenes too polished. Seeking inspiration, he watched a brutal, painful brawl from the film They Live. He decided to ditch the sleek aesthetic for a visceral, grounded style where every punch felt like it actually hurt.
Released in September 2003, The Rundown stars Dwayne Johnson—credited as The Rock—as a debt collector sent to Brazil to retrieve a loan shark's son. Despite earning positive reviews and an A- CinemaScore, the film was a box office disappointment, grossing roughly $80.9 million against an $85 million budget. While it never became a blockbuster, it has since cultivated a dedicated following.
The production was marked by unconventional challenges. During location scouting in June 2002, director Peter Berg and producer Kevin Misher were held up by armed robbers in Brazil, forcing the crew to relocate to Hawaii. On set, the action was often improvised; Seann William Scott noted that the team essentially made up the film as they went along. One particularly ambitious stunt involved a massive mountain tumble, inspired by the 'agony of defeat' imagery from Wide World of Sports, which required a stuntman willing to take a heavy hit.
The film is also remembered for a brief, uncredited cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger. While visiting Universal Studios, Schwarzenegger shared lunch with Johnson and agreed to appear on camera immediately. His line, 'have fun,' is widely interpreted as a symbolic passing of the torch from the outgoing action star to the rising Johnson. Berg has spent years attempting to develop a sequel, exploring various scripts and potential co-stars like Kevin Hart and Jonah Hill, though scheduling conflicts and creative shifts have kept the project in development limbo for over two decades.
