In short: The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman’s iconic 1989–1996 comic series, faced a notoriously difficult journey to the screen. After years of stalled film projects and creative departures, the fantasy drama finally debuted on Netflix in 2022. It follows Morpheus, the personification of dreams, as he attempts to restore his fractured realm.

The path to adapting The Sandman was fraught with obstacles, beginning as early as 1991. For years, the project languished in development hell, a common fate for ambitious adaptations. A significant attempt occurred in 2013 when David S. Goyer pitched a film version to Warner Bros. with Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to star and potentially direct. However, creative differences led to Gordon-Levitt’s departure in 2016, prompting Warner Bros. to pivot toward television.

Netflix eventually secured the rights in June 2019, with development led by Gaiman, Goyer, and Allan Heinberg. Filming for the first season spanned from October 2020 to August 2021. Upon its August 5, 2022, premiere, the series earned critical acclaim for its production design, visual effects, and faithfulness to the source material. The narrative centers on Morpheus, who is captured in an occult ritual in 1916 and held for 106 years before escaping in 2022 to reclaim his domain, the Dreaming.

The series expanded its scope in its second season, which premiered in July 2025 across two parts. While the first season introduced viewers to the Endless—a family of personifications including Death, Desire, and Despair—the second season brought in characters like Delirium, Destiny, and Destruction. Despite its success, it was announced in January 2025 that the series would conclude with this second season. The show’s legacy remains defined by its complex world-building and its ability to finally translate Gaiman’s vision into a cohesive, live-action format.
