In short: Created by Russell T Davies, The Sarah Jane Adventures followed the investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith as she protected Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Starring Elisabeth Sladen, the series became a critical success, praised for its imaginative storytelling and willingness to tackle complex, darker themes like loss and homelessness for younger audiences.

The Sarah Jane Adventures emerged after Russell T Davies vetoed an initial proposal for a series about a young Doctor, arguing that such an origin story would diminish the character's mystery. Instead, he centered the show on Sarah Jane Smith, a former companion of the Doctor who had appeared in the parent series between 1973 and 1976. The show was commissioned before scripts were even written, a testament to the BBC's confidence in the concept. It debuted on 1 January 2007 with a 60-minute special, Invasion of the Bane, and quickly established a unique identity within the Whoniverse.

The series was defined by its grounded, character-driven approach. While it featured extraterrestrial threats and high-tech gadgets like Mr Smith, an alien computer living in an attic, it was lauded for its emotional depth. Critics noted that it avoided being 'just' a children's programme, instead offering a full-blooded drama. The show's cast evolved over its five-year run, with Sarah Jane mentoring a rotating group of young companions, including Maria Jackson, Luke Smith, and Clyde Langer. The series also maintained links to its parent show, featuring guest appearances by the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors and former companions like Jo Jones.

The show's production was abruptly halted by the death of its lead actress, Elisabeth Sladen, on 19 April 2011. While three stories for the fifth series had been completed, the remaining episodes were cancelled, leaving several plot arcs, including the introduction of the character Sky and the mystery of the Shopkeeper, unresolved. Despite this premature end, the series left a lasting legacy. It was celebrated in a 2020 webcast tribute, Farewell, Sarah Jane, and has since expanded into audio dramas produced by Big Finish. The show remains a touchstone for its audience, remembered for its heart and its ability to treat children as intelligent viewers capable of engaging with profound human experiences.
