How a minimalist shark thriller used real-world tricks to deceive its audience
In short: The 2016 survival horror film The Shallows became a surprise box office success by stripping away excess. Director Jaume Collet-Serra avoided creature-feature tropes and gore, relying on a single lead performance and a clever visual strategy to convince viewers that a largely digital production was unfolding on a real beach.
Released in June 2016, The Shallows follows medical student Nancy Adams, played by Blake Lively, who becomes stranded on a rock just 200 yards from shore after a shark attack. The film, which grossed $119.1 million against a modest $13 to $17 million budget, was praised for its lean, focused approach. Critics noted that while the premise was simple, the execution relied on a high-stakes, athletic performance from Lively, who performed some of her own stunts, including one that resulted in an actual injury.
The production process was marked by a commitment to minimalism. Despite the film's reliance on computer-generated imagery for the shark, director Jaume Collet-Serra insisted on a specific technique to ground the experience. He estimated that only 10% of the film was shot on location, yet he utilized a strategy where every scene contained at least one real shot. This intentional blend was designed to trick the audience into perceiving the entire environment as authentic, avoiding the overly stylized look common in similar genre films.
The film also navigated unique production challenges, particularly regarding its animal co-star. The script originally featured more dialogue between Nancy and an injured gull she names Steven Seagull. Producers initially considered using puppets or CGI, fearing that training a bird would be impossible. However, after Lively successfully fed wild seagulls during location scouting in Australia, they opted for real birds. Ultimately, the director cut much of the interaction, deciding that the character's desperate situation spoke for itself without needing to explain her plight to a bird.
