Why a hit miniseries about unlikely killers became a four-season psychological anthology
In short: Developed by Derek Simonds, The Sinner began as a singular eight-part adaptation of Petra Hammesfahr’s 1999 novel. Its critical success and high ratings forced a pivot, transforming it into an anthology series. Bill Pullman remains the only constant, anchoring four distinct seasons of investigations into the motivations behind inexplicable crimes.
The Sinner subverts the traditional police procedural by focusing less on the 'who' and more on the 'why.' In the inaugural season, Detective Harry Ambrose investigates a woman who commits a public, seemingly motiveless murder. This premise, adapted from Hammesfahr’s German novel, was relocated to Upstate New York and softened in tone to suit the American television landscape. The role served as a significant milestone for executive producer Jessica Biel, who sought to cultivate challenging projects rather than wait for them to arrive.
Following the first season's acclaim—which included Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations—the show expanded into an anthology format. Each subsequent season follows Ambrose as he navigates new, unsettling cases. In the second season, he returns to his hometown to investigate a young boy who confessed to poisoning a couple. The third season centers on a fatal car accident in New York that masks a deeper, more disturbing conspiracy. By the fourth and final season, a retired Ambrose travels to coastal Maine, only to be pulled into a tragedy involving a prominent local family.
The series ran from August 2, 2017, until December 1, 2021, spanning four seasons and thirty-two episodes in total. While the cast rotates to accommodate the anthology structure, the show maintains a consistent focus on the psychological underpinnings of its culprits. The production utilized various locations across New York state to build its atmosphere, including the Mt. Pleasant Justice Court building in Valhalla, which stood in for the Dorchester police station. Despite its evolution from a limited miniseries to a multi-year franchise, the show remained committed to its core mission: exploring the dark, hidden secrets that ordinary people are desperate to keep buried.
