A hard-drinking preacher and a vampire search for God in this dark comedy series.
In short: Based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher follows Jesse Custer, a man infused with a supernatural power to command others. Alongside his volatile ex-girlfriend Tulip and a vampire named Cassidy, he embarks on a quest to find God across four seasons of television.
The television adaptation of Preacher, developed by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen, premiered on AMC on May 22, 2016. The series centers on Jesse Custer, a preacher from Annville, Texas, who struggles with a crisis of faith while possessing a newfound ability to force anyone to obey his commands. His journey is complicated by the presence of the Saint of Killers, an unstoppable supernatural assassin summoned from Hell to destroy him, and the Grail, a powerful secret organization led by Herr Klaus Helmut Starr.
The path to the screen was long and fraught with creative hurdles. In 2006, Mark Steven Johnson secured the rights and pitched the project to HBO, envisioning a six-year run that would faithfully adapt all 75 issues of the source material. However, the network eventually canceled the production in 2008, citing concerns that the show was too violent. Following this, the rights moved to Columbia Pictures, where directors like Sam Mendes and D.J. Caruso were briefly attached before the project stalled, eventually leading to the successful AMC iteration that concluded in 2019.
Beyond the main narrative, the show explored a surreal cast of characters, including historical figures like Adolf Hitler and religious icons like Jesus Christ. The production also featured a live aftershow, Talking Preacher, hosted by Chris Hardwick. This companion series provided a space for cast members and creators to discuss the show's complex themes and plot developments, mirroring the format used for other AMC programs like Talking Dead. The series ultimately spanned four seasons, ending its run on September 29, 2019.
