In short: In the 2008 Iranian drama The Song of Sparrows, a simple ostrich farmer is thrust into the chaotic streets of Tehran. As he navigates the city as a motorcycle taxi driver, his once-generous spirit begins to wither under the weight of greed, forcing his family to intervene before he is lost.

Directed by Majid Majidi, The Song of Sparrows follows Karim, a man living a contented life on an ostrich farm outside Tehran. His world is upended when an ostrich escapes, leading to his termination. Desperate to replace his daughter Haniyeh's broken hearing aid—a necessity for her upcoming exams—Karim travels to the city. He soon finds himself mistaken for a motorcycle taxi driver, a role that exposes him to the frantic, transactional nature of urban life.

As Karim ferries passengers and goods through heavy traffic, the city's influence begins to corrupt his character. He starts hoarding discarded junk, growing increasingly greedy and neglecting the very goal that brought him to the city. This transformation deeply distresses his wife, Narges, and his children. The narrative serves as a poignant exploration of how environment shapes morality, suggesting that the pursuit of material gain can easily obscure the values of generosity and honesty that once defined a person.

The turning point arrives when a pile of his accumulated junk collapses, leaving Karim injured and unable to work. During his recovery, his son Hussein takes on the burden of supporting the family. In a moment of profound clarity, Karim witnesses his son choosing compassion over profit when a barrel of fish intended for a business venture spills. Instead of letting the fish perish, Hussein releases them into a nearby water source. This act of grace, coupled with the eventual return of the escaped ostrich to the farm, signals a restoration of Karim's original spirit.

The film received significant international acclaim, including a Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival for Reza Naji. It was also selected as Iran's representative for the 81st Academy Awards. Through its simple yet resonant story, the film highlights the tension between rural simplicity and urban ambition, ultimately arguing that the most important values are those preserved by the people closest to us.
