Why a 1991 drama became an albatross for the Iranian-American community
In short: Not Without My Daughter tells the harrowing true story of an American woman escaping Iran with her child. While it became a global phenomenon, the film faced intense backlash for its portrayal of Iranian culture, sparking debates about racism, stereotypes, and the power of cinema to shape international perceptions.
Released in 1991, Not Without My Daughter depicts the escape of Betty Mahmoody and her daughter, Mahtob, from Betty's abusive husband, Sayyed Bozorg Mahmoody, in Iran. Based on Betty's 1987 book, the film stars Sally Field and Alfred Molina. The production, filmed in Israel and the United States, struggled at the box office, grossing $43 million worldwide against a $15 million budget. Critics were divided; while some praised the dramatic performances, others, including Roger Ebert, condemned the film for making troubling moral and racial assertions.
The film's legacy is complex. Iranian-American author Reza Aslan described the movie as an 'albatross' for Iranians in the U.S., arguing it reinforced harmful stereotypes about abusive men and oppressive Islamic society. Jack Shaheen included the film in his analysis of negative depictions of Muslims in American media. Even the score by Jerry Goldsmith faced criticism for allegedly fueling these racial charges. Despite this, the film has maintained a curious afterlife, appearing in educational settings and even being broadcast in Paris before the 1998 USA vs. Iran World Cup match.
Over time, the narrative has been challenged from multiple angles. In 2002, the documentary Without My Daughter presented Dr. Mahmoody’s perspective, attempting to contradict the original book and film. Mahtob Mahmoody later released her own account in 2015, titled My Name is Mahtob. Reflecting on the film's impact in 2016, Gazelle Emami noted that it left a lasting mark on American perceptions, specifically making women more apprehensive about marrying Iranian men. The film remains a polarizing case study in how personal stories can be transformed into broader, often contentious, cultural symbols.
