A surrealist director made a G-rated masterpiece about a man on a lawnmower.
In short: David Lynch is known for dark, surrealist cinema, but in 1999 he released The Straight Story. This biographical drama, his only film to receive a G rating, follows an elderly man traveling hundreds of miles on a lawn tractor to reconcile with his estranged brother. It is a quiet, profound triumph.
The film recounts the true 1994 journey of Alvin Straight, a 73-year-old World War II veteran who traveled from Laurens, Iowa, to Mount Zion, Wisconsin, on a riding lawnmower. Unable to drive due to his age and vision, Straight sought to visit his brother, Lyle, who had suffered a stroke. The production, directed by David Lynch and produced by Mary Sweeney, was filmed chronologically along the actual route, even using Straight's real home and neighbors.
Richard Farnsworth, who played Alvin, delivered a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. At 79, he became the oldest nominee in that category at the time, a record he held for 21 years. Farnsworth was terminally ill with metastatic prostate cancer during filming, and the leg paralysis shown on screen was real. He passed away by suicide in 2000, shortly after the film's release.
While Lynch is famous for experimental and often unsettling imagery, he described this project as his most experimental work because of its simplicity. Critics lauded the film for its unsentimental portrayal of the American Midwest and its focus on human connection. Roger Ebert, who had previously been critical of Lynch's work, gave the film four stars, praising the realistic dialogue and the depth of the encounters Straight experiences on his slow, deliberate journey.
The film's release was handled by Walt Disney Pictures, a decision driven by the studio's belief that the story celebrated American values of healing and forgiveness. Despite its modest theatrical gross of $6.2 million in the United States, it achieved universal acclaim. Lynch famously refused to include chapter markers on the original DVD release, insisting that a film is a continuum that should be experienced as a whole.
