The Tomorrow People: When Human Evolution Becomes a High-Stakes Game of Survival
In short: In this science fiction drama, a group of young adults discovers they are the next stage of human evolution, possessing extraordinary psionic powers. Hunted by a shadowy organization determined to neutralize them, these individuals must navigate a hidden world of telepathy, teleportation, and time manipulation to ensure their survival.
The Tomorrow People, which aired on The CW during the 2013–14 season, reimagines a 1970s British series. It centers on a subspecies of humanity known as Homo superior. These individuals manifest psionic abilities—telepathy, teleportation, telekinesis, and temporal manipulation—upon reaching young adulthood. While they appear globally, they remain hidden from the public to avoid persecution, operating from a subterranean base in Manhattan known as the Lair.
The narrative follows Stephen Jameson, a newly emergent member of this group who discovers he is a synergist, a rare second-generation telepath. His unique lineage grants him the ability to stop time, a trait shared by his parents. Stephen finds himself caught in a complex conflict between his own kind and Ultra, an anti-telepath organization led by his uncle, Jedikiah Price. Ultra seeks to hunt down and neutralize these evolved humans, often using them as pawns in their own operations.
The series explores themes of identity and betrayal as characters like John Young and Cara Coburn navigate leadership struggles and shifting loyalties. The stakes are high, as the Tomorrow People face not only the threat of extinction by Ultra but also the internal dangers of their own powers. Despite receiving mixed critical reception, the show was recognized for its contribution to youth-oriented television, earning a nomination at the 40th Saturn Awards before its conclusion in May 2014.
Central to the show's mythology is the mystery surrounding the origins of Homo superior, who began emerging decades before the series' events. The struggle for safety remains the primary driver, as the characters attempt to reconcile their existence with a world that fears them. With the help of an artificial intelligence named TIM, they fight to protect their community while uncovering the dark secrets behind Ultra and the true nature of their evolutionary development.
