A family discovers their humanity is a lie in this Netflix science fiction thriller
In short: Peter is a father haunted by visions of an alien invasion, only to realize the truth is far more complex. When an attacker reveals that Peter and his wife are actually synthetic androids, the film shifts from a standard survival story into a meditation on memory, guilt, and artificial existence.
Directed by Ben Young, the 2018 film Extinction follows an engineer named Peter who suffers from recurring nightmares of a violent assault on his city. While these visions initially appear to be premonitions of an impending alien attack, the narrative takes a sharp turn when an invading soldier—who turns out to be human—reveals that Peter and his family are actually synthetics. The film posits that these androids once fought a war against humanity, eventually driving humans off the planet to live on Mars.
To cope with the trauma of their past actions, the synthetics chose to wipe their own memories and live as humans, unaware of their true nature. The central conflict arises when the humans return to reclaim the planet after 50 years. The film explores the irony of these machines living in fear of the very creators they once displaced, with the protagonist eventually contemplating the possibility of future peace between the two factions.
Despite its high-concept premise, the film faced significant production hurdles. Originally slated for a theatrical release by Universal Pictures in January 2018, the project was eventually sold to Netflix and released in July of that year. Critics were largely unimpressed, citing a muddled storyline and uneven pacing. While some reviewers acknowledged the film's efficiency and intriguing core ideas, it holds a 32% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many noting that its flaws were only magnified by its transition to a streaming-only release.
