A fictional Russian attack on the UK: how high-stakes decisions unfold in The Wargame
In short: In 2027, a Russian research vessel appears off Orkney, triggering a cascade of cyberattacks, submarine sinkings, and social media disinformation. This is not a history lesson, but a "constructed documentary" designed to simulate the terrifying complexity of modern, hybrid warfare.
Premiering on Sky One in September 2026, The Wargame is a five-part docudrama produced by The Garden. Rather than traditional fiction, the series functions as a simulation of high-level decision-making during a hypothetical 2027 Russian assault on the United Kingdom. To guarantee accuracy, creators collaborated with Deborah Haynes, Sky News' Security and Defence Editor, alongside various defence and military specialists.
The narrative explores the "hybrid" nature of modern conflict, where the lines between peace and war blur. The plot escalates from localized incidents—such as the death of two RAF pilots and a cyberattack on NHS Yorkshire—to full-scale military retaliation. The series depicts a world where deepfake videos of Deputy Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon can alienate the United States, and where the UK's response to a Russian Oreshnik missile—capable of carrying a Hiroshima-scale nuclear payload—leaves the Prime Minister facing an impossible choice.
The show's impact extends beyond the screen. While critics like Mangan in The Guardian have described the experience as "enjoyably terrifying," the series also sparked debate regarding its real-world implications. Following the broadcast, real-life UK Secretary of Defence Wes Streeting noted that seeing such threats might increase public sympathy for higher military spending. The series also utilized generative AI to visualize Russian attacks and featured a high-profile cast of British politicians, including Michael Gove and Penny Mordaunt, to heighten the sense of a high-stakes political trial.
