How a British thriller explores the invisible chaos of modern cyber warfare
In short: When a cyber-attack cripples the UK internet, the battleground shifts from physical borders to digital code. The Undeclared War explores this near-future reality, following a student placement at GCHQ as misinformation and malware threaten to destabilize a nation and escalate into physical conflict.
Created by Peter Kosminsky and Colin Callender, the series centers on Saara Parvin, a computer science student who begins a one-year placement at GCHQ. Her technical skills are put to the test when a massive cyber-attack disrupts the UK internet. Parvin's ability to identify hidden layers of malware within the code becomes a focal point of the investigation, even as she struggles with the isolation of her secretive work.
The narrative follows a complex web of international tension, specifically involving Vadim Trusov, a Russian programmer. The plot escalates through a cycle of digital reprisals: Russian interference in UK election reporting leads the UK to launch remote cyber attacks against Russian arms companies. This tension reaches a breaking point when Russia uses a leak of NSA software from a UK site to isolate GCHQ from the NSA.
The show's marketing was as provocative as its subject matter. In June 2022, adverts were broadcast to look like live news, drawing inspiration from the 1938 radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds. This caused panic among some viewers who mistook the fictional Prime Minister, played by Adrian Lester, for the actual Prime Minister Boris Johnson. While the series received mixed reviews, with a 59 Metacritic score, it has been noted for its dynamic portrayal of cybercrime.
The tension between digital and physical conflict is a central theme. As the tit-for-tat cyber reprisals become overtly physical, the series highlights the high stakes of modern intelligence work. The first series premiered on 30 June 2022 on Channel 4, and a second six-episode series was announced on 12 February 2025, premiering in July 2026.
